  • UniFi Pill Router Unreliable

I had a recent problem that was difficult to solve, and I don’t understand why the fix worked, but I know the router works now.

The UniFi Dream Router was restarting randomly. It had been dropped from a height, and the little cap at the top had come off. I snapped the cap back on, making sure to align the two sockets in the cap to the posts on the router. It has been working perfectly ever since.

I would love to understand why this worked, but I’ll take the win. Comment below if you’ve had the same issue or if you know why this fixed it.

  • Strength In Diversity Is A Lie

The phrase “strength is in diversity” is said in many places for many different reasons. It is one of the key tenets promoted by the moralists of our United States culture. It is in the air these days, and it sounds noble. It sounds correct. It sounds Christian. It is, however, as a statement by itself, not true.

Where this becomes most evident is when diversity itself becomes the goal. This is also true in cases where uniformity is the goal. Inclusion and exclusion by groups that value diversity or uniformity above all else are often based on shallow and meaningless characteristics. The much more profound merits and character of the people themselves are ignored. It’s a cheap replacement for a noble and holy valuation of all people on their intrinsic, created selves.

Strength is in unity. This truism stands alone much better. Unity of purpose, spirit, and values has strength beyond the common. When the souls of a group are knit together in a communal struggle to achieve an outcome, the sum is greater than the whole. This is because the synergy of effort increases inertia and multiplies the effectiveness of their force.

Wisdom is often found in diversity, and through that wisdom, strength is increased. A stable identity is often found in uniformity. Diversity of thought, opinion, and perspective increases the base from which an individual or group can operate. Uniformity in practice, appearance, and values brings a strong sense of community.

Apart from unity of will and purpose, diversity does nothing. A man of two minds does nothing. He sits and vacillates. I admire the ability to make up one’s mind, act on the decision, and yet learn and adjust with changing circumstances, without doubting oneself. God can use a person like that.

I find this passage in James quite interesting in the context of this conversation.

[Jas 1:5-8 CSB] [5] Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God — who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly — and it will be given to him. [6] But let him ask in faith without doubting. For the doubter is like the surging sea, driven and tossed by the wind. [7] That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord, [8] being double-minded and unstable in all his ways.

Why would the Lord give things to a person who does nothing with them? What would the Lord expect him to do with it? He’s not stupid. Wisdom is given to those who will do something with it. Servants/Stewards who are faithful and active with what they already have.

Outside the context of unity, diversity is meaningless. The differences are just crayons in a box. Yay. They aren’t doing anything. Yet, in the hands of an artist with vision and purpose, each color becomes important, and a beautiful piece of art is accomplished.

My reason for thinking on this subject is that the church I attend is currently wrestling with what to do with the diversity of thought and yet no unifying mission. It’s a study in what happens when this is true. As stewards of the Gospel and obedient practice, we are responsible for it and hold it in high value. We act, though, as if we don’t know what to do with it. We fluctuate with the times, and people easily come and go from the membership. Unfortunately, our youth find it just as easy to go elsewhere as it is to stay.

We, as a group of believers and as individuals, say we want to be guided by the Lord. Yet we don’t seek His face for direction. We also don’t try very hard to do anything on our own because we are afraid of putting our faith in our own efforts.

Where to from here? I don’t know. I’m included in the we. I’m as indecisive as they come. From where comes purpose? From where comes a single mind? From where comes decisiveness? All good things come from the Lord. Will He give us what we need? Should we ask Him?

  • UniFi Losing Static IPv6 Connectivity

I am using a static IPv6 address provisioned by my ISP.

I recently encountered an issue with my UDM Pro not being able to ping public IPv6 addresses. The ping command returned a “Network is unreachable” error.

I fixed it by changing a value in the WAN settings for that connection, saving it, and then correcting it again.

  • Windows System File Maintenance

I like to occasionally run scans on my Windows system files to ensure my Windows installation is stable.

    Step 1: Run DSIM

Open Command Prompt as administrator and run the following command

    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

This may take a few minutes. When completed, follow step 2 in the same Command Prompt.

Step 2: Run the system file checker

Run the following command in Command Prompt.

    sfc /scannow

If any integrity violations were found and repaired, reboot your computer.

  • Windows 10 Not Booting After Drive Clone

An SSD was failing, and the cloning process did not go well. When I tried booting from the drive, it immediately failed with a generic Error code of 0xc000000e.

    Solution:

Boot from a Windows installation USB or Disk.

Enter the troubleshooting menu and open the Command Prompt.

Ensure the boot drive is not an MBR disk by going through this series of commands. Hit enter after each one.

    diskpart
    select disk 0
    list partition

This should result in a list of partitions. Select your primary partition.

    select partition 4
    active

This may result in a message saying “The ACTIVE command can only be used on fixed MBR disks.” If that is the case type

    exit

So if that is the case, we can switch to a different strategy. Check to see if drive C is your Windows drive by entering

    c:

    and then

    dir

You should see a list of folders that include Windows and Users. If you don’t, try looking at drive D or E.

If drive C is your drive, type

    bcdboot c:\windows

If you get the message that the boot files have been successfully created, you can try booting to Windows. If it is a different drive, substitute that drive letter in the previous command.

  • Get Into Windows Without Password

Note: This works on computers with only one active user. If this is the case, you will need to boot from a USB stick to copy the cmd.exe file. The instructions are roughly the same, except for the method by which you get there. You can boot from a live Linux environment or from a Windows installation drive. In the case of the latter, you can pull up a terminal by pressing Shift+F10 on the first screen.

At the Windows Login screen, click the power symbol in the lower right corner. Hold shift and select “Restart.” Keep holding Shift through the reboot until the Windows boot screen says “Please wait.”

Select “Advanced” under Recovery Options and then open the Command Prompt.

Enter this command and press Enter

    cd C:\Windows\System32
    Caveats

The Windows PE drive letters may not align with the Windows proper lettering. In this case, you may need to run this command to list the available drives to find the active Windows installation:

    fsutil fsinfo drives

If that doesn’t work, use this command:

    wmic logicaldisk get caption

I also had a strange issue where it didn’t seem to honor the cd command until I entered this command

    C: dir

Enter these commands and hit the Enter key after each.

    rename utilman.exe utilman.exebak
    copy cmd.exe utilman.exe

Close the terminal and select the option to continue booting into Windows. This time, when you get to the login screen, click the Accessibility button. This will open a command prompt with Administrator privileges.

Enter this command and hit Enter:

    net user administrator /active:yes

Then, enter this command and edit the password for the Administrator account.

    control userpasswords2

If, for some reason, that doesn’t work, run this command

    net user <username> *

Hit Enter and set a new password.

Now reboot one more time. This time, when you get to the login screen, you will be able to select the Administrator user in the lower left corner. Enter the password you set in the last step, and you’re in!

  • Microsoft PowerApps Pages SSL Certificate Maintenance

    1. Steps to create a new certificate in Namecheap and install it on your PowerApps Pages domain.
    2. Generate a CSR using this tool https://decoder.link/csr_generator
      1. Domain: the.domainyouwishtosec.ure
        1. Locality: YourTown
        2. State: Your State
        3. Organization: Name Of Your Organization
        4. Email: [email protected]
        5. Two-letter country abbreviation: US
    3. SAVE THE PRIVATE KEY!
      1. To use it, it will need to be in a .key file. You can create one by pasting the Private Key from the CSR creation step into a text editor and saving the file with a .txt extension
      2. To keep things clean, use the name the_domainyouwishtosec_ure.txt
      3. After this is done, close the file and change the file extension to .key so it looks like this the_domainyouwishtosec_ure.key
    4. Copy the CSR text and paste it into the Namecheap form asking you to Renew the certificate.
    5. Download the files it generates. They may be emailed to you and you can download them from the portal also. Unzip it.
    6. Generate a .pfx file using the tool here https://decoder.link/converter Upload the the_domainyouwishtosec_ure.p7b file
    7. Upload thethe_domainyouwishtosec_ure.key file you created earlier
    8. Create a strong password. You will use this password later so save it. Random and at least 20 characters
    9. Save and unzip the .zip file to reveal the .pfx file
    10. Upload the file to your PowerApps Page portal
      1. Click on “Manage SSL certificates”
      2. A panel will fly out from the right side
      3. Under the section titled “Manage SSL certificates” click the +New
      4. Select the .pfx file and enter the password you created.
      5. Wait 3 beats and click OK.
    11. The final step is to delete the old SSL certificate and bind the new one to the domain.

The first time I did this, the Microsoft page threw errors. I created a new .pfx file and all was well.

  • Image in Gmail Signature Not Showing in Outlook [Workaround]

Google does not officially support embedding images in email signatures. While you can add an image to a signature, it gets sent as a linked image, which Outlook will not display. However, I found a workaround to embed the image directly into the email.

    Step-by-Step Guide

    1. Optimize and Encode Your Image:
      • Use an optimized image with a limited color palette and reduced size to minimize the encoded text length.
      • Encode your image to base64 using an online tool like elmah.io’s Base64 Image Encoder.
      • You will copy the code generated in the “HTML usage:” output.
    2. Create an HTML File:
      • Open your favorite text editor and create a new file.
      • Insert the following basic HTML structure:
        <!DOCTYPE html>
<!-- Replace this line with the code from the "HTML usage:" output -->
        </html>
      • Replace the second line with the code from the “HTML usage:” box.
      • Save the file with a .html extension.
    3. Render and Copy the Image:
      • Open the HTML file in your browser. You should see your image rendered.
      • Select and copy the image in the browser.
    4. Add the Image to Your Gmail Signature:
      • Compose a new email in Gmail and paste the copied image into the message body.
      • Send the email to yourself.
      • Open the received email and copy the image from there.
      • Go to Gmail Settings, select “See all settings,” and scroll down to the Signature section.
      • Paste the copied image into your signature and edit the text as desired.
      • Scroll to the bottom of the page and save your settings.
    5. Verify and Maintain the Image:
      • Send a test email to someone who uses Outlook to verify that the image displays correctly.
      • Archive the original email that contains the image, but do not delete it, as (I believe) the signature pulls the image from the original email to embed the image.

    Important Notes

    • Mobile Compatibility: Currently, this method does not work with the Gmail app on iOS. The image will show while composing an email, but the recipient will only see a placeholder once the email is sent. To avoid this, enable the “Mobile Signature” feature in the Gmail app.

By following these steps, you can successfully embed an image in your Gmail signature that will display correctly in Outlook.

Disclosure: I wrote this post and then prompted ChatGPT to “edit this blog post for clarity:” This post is only lightly edited from that output.

  • Adobe Acrobat Closes Immediately After Opening [Workaround]

Occasionally, Adobe Acrobat will close again almost immediately after opening. Here is a short video capturing the problem.

To fix it, open Adobe Acrobat Distiller instead. The authentication pop-up will stay open and you can complete your authentication. In my case, I needed to de-authorize another instance of my computer so I could authenticate again.

  • SMB Share on Upgraded TrueNAS Cobia Not Allowing Admin To Change Permissions

NOTE: This setting needs to be set to “Default share parameters” in TrueNAS SCALE Fangtooth 25.04

I recently upgraded a TrueNAS Core server to TrueNAS Scale. I first went to Bluefin and then to Cobia. I had no Apps and the process was straightforward.

After the upgrade, I could no longer edit Security settings on folders in Windows. I tried using the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) and File Explorer. The error titled “Error applying security” said, “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.”

THE FIX: I deleted the old SMB Share and created a new one with the same name. The new share needs to have the NFSv4/SMB preset selected.

It was a seamless change that didn’t disrupt the drives mapped on Domain clients.

The process I used to get there was a bit more convoluted. I first added a new share called Data2. I connected to Data2 with File Explorer and discovered that I could edit the Security settings. Then I renamed Data to Data1 and renamed Data2 to Data. The clients were still able to connect, but I was no longer able to edit the Security settings.

This made me think that there was a residual config file or something so I created another new share called Data3. I then deleted Data and renamed Data3 to Data. I verified that it was working and finally deleted Data1.
